How Do I Know if My Child is Ready for Kindergarten?

As kindergarten approaches, many families ask the same question: “Is my child ready?” It’s a thoughtful question, and one with a bigger answer than most generic checklists can provide.

Kindergarten readiness is not only about recognizing letters or counting to 20. Research continues to show that readiness includes the whole child: social confidence, emotional regulation, independence, communication, and curiosity. When children feel capable and secure in a learning environment, academic skills follow more naturally. The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) reminds us that readiness is a combination of physical, social, emotional, language, and cognitive development, not just academics.

Readiness grows over time

Children don’t become “ready” all at once. Readiness develops through strong relationships, meaningful routines, and intentional teaching experiences. Research on executive function (skills such as focusing attention, managing emotions, and following directions) shows these abilities are strong predictors of later school success. That’s why high-quality early learning programs focus on building independence, supporting emotional regulation, and growing a child’s communication, curiosity, and confidence in group settings.

When an added year can be beneficial

Every child develops at their own pace. For some children, especially those who are younger in their age group or still building confidence and self-regulation, an additional year in a Pre-K or Junior Kindergarten environment is a positive step. An added year can help children foster confidence, strengthen peer relationships, develop routines, and grow independence.

How our schools support readiness

Across all Learning Care schools, children build readiness through our Learn as We Grow® curriculum. This child-led approach supports development from infancy through Pre-K and beyond. Teachers collaborate across classrooms, observe children closely, and partner with families to ensure each child is supported and prepared for their next step.

Every child’s path is unique

Some children are ready to leap into kindergarten without parents having a single doubt. Others benefit from a little more time to grow at their own pace. Both paths are valid. What matters most is that children enter kindergarten feeling confident, capable, and excited about learning.
